A Montgomery County father is fighting back after his children received unexcused absences due to a family trip.
Mike Rossi took his kids out of class for three days for what he deemed as a "once-in-a-lifetime" learning experience. He took his children to Boston, to watch him overcome his own injuries at the Boston marathon. He told the school's angry principal that his children got the chance to witness the patriotic triumph of a nation, as well as pay their respects for victims of the terrorist bombing.
Rossi also took his children to visit several Boston landmarks to learn about our nation's history. The location of the Boston Massacre, which kickstarted the Revolutionary War, as well as several graves of our nation's founding fathers.
The principal wasn't having any of it though, and said that the Abington School District did not recognize family trips as an excused absence. Adding that after three days of unexcused absences, a criminal complaint would be filed without warning.
Below you can see a letter that Rossi wrote to the principal, which has quickly gone viral. Rossi explained that his kids are actually now "ahead" in their education, since they aren't set to learn about American history until next year.
Rossi is now fighting to change the school's absence policy, and with such public support on his side, he might actually create some waves.
What do you think? Should it be considered illegal to take your children on a family trip like this? Educational or not, should Rossi be in trouble with the law? Let us know what you think!
