Firefighters from Salt Lake City, UT proved just how strong their brotherhood is as one of their coworker’s fought and overcame cancer.
Bob Silverthorne, an 18-year firefighter, had been battling cancer for four years until doctors finally told him he was cured. It’s not uncommon for firefighters to be diagnosed with cancer. They are actually two times more likely than the average person to get diagnosed because of the intense exposure to smoke as they save people and animals' lives.
"I don't want any of my brothers and sisters to have to go through cancer," Silverthorne told Utah’s KSL. "But it's in the forefront of the firefighters' world right now. I've lost good friends."
In turn, firefighters gathered at Silverthorne’s home to support him and the others fighting cancer in a huge way. Like the football players who shaved their head for a teammate's mother who was battling cancer, these firefighters did the same thing.
Eventually, local residents also joined in to get their heads shaved.
“You start shaving people’s heads and all of sudden it’s like ‘Alright I’m in!' ” said Silverthorne. “You have to run to Walgreens and get some more clippers."
And just wait till you see who got his hair cut at the :50 mark – it’s heartwarming.
