Peacocks are renowned the world over for their incredible beauty.
They have gorgeous, jewel-toned feathers and long tails trailing out behind. It's no wonder that they've appeared in myths and literature over the centuries. They're symbols of the Greek goddess Hera, and the Hindu god of war rides one into battle. Early Christians associated them with heaven and paradise.
In short, they're pretty amazing! But to be fair, there are a lot of amazing birds out there in nature, including some you might never have heard of because they're so rare.
But all those fancy feathers, as pretty as they are, have to be a bit on the heavy side, right? Imagine running while wearing a dress with a long train.
Now imagine trying to fly with all that! There's even an Aesop's fable about a proud peacock who gets a dose of humility when he realizes his beautiful feathers weigh him down and prevent him from flying.
But… that's not entirely accurate. Peacocks can actually fly. And when they do? It's breathtaking!
Check out some peacocks in flight below and enjoy their beautiful feathers and bright colors, and imagine seeing one in person!

Peacocks are known for their gorgeous plumage and elegant physique, but few people ever witness them flying through the sky, lovely feathers spread!

Although with all that plumage, it's pretty surprising that they can even get off the ground.

Also, to be technical, the correct term for these birds is peafowl. A peacock is a male, and a peahen is a female. The babies? Peachicks!

Seeing a peacock in flight is a rare event, as they prefer to stay on the ground. But when they take off, it's a sight!

Typically, peacocks will resort to flight when they feel threatened, like if a predator appears. They'll start their getaway by running, and then build into flight.

And while their feathers don't impede their ability to fly, they do have a limited flight distance.

But they'll make up for that limitation with style!

Peacocks are usually a rich blue and green color, but sometimes, they're leucistic, or lacking in pigment. It's slightly different than albinism, but results in a striking white palette.

And while they have those cool blues and greens on the ground, in flight, their wings are bright orange!

And for birds often associated with pride and vanity, they can really back up their look with skills!

Peacocks are native to India and nations throughout central and southern Africa. They also have a shrill call.
The males use their extravagant tails to attract mates. Like other birds, it's only the males that are bright and colorful. Females are duller, which helps them camouflage and keep their nests safe.

These beautiful birds have more than looks going for them!
