A few JV football players at Fenton High School in Detroit, were on the field practicing one afternoon. It was an ordinary day until Jaythan Wright, a player, saw the unthinkable.
"This little boy came in and he was screaming and crying like help. Then this dude came up and he looked kind of creepy," said Jaythan.
The young middle school student was standing alone near the field when a strange, middle-aged man approached him. That's when the entire team went over to investigate.
"The man was gesturing trying to get the kid to come over," said JV football player Andrew Moore. "The kid went behind me and said ‘Please don't let him take me' and I'm like, 'We won't, bud.' So we all tell him to get out of here, go away."
Athletes may get a bad rap from time to time, but as star athlete Malcolm Mitchell proved when he joined a woman's book club: You should never judge a book by its cover (or its stereotype).
Once the creep realized he was surrounded by a group of young heroes, he ran off. But the football team didn't stop there.
"We chased him out of there," said Wright. "I took pictures of his license plate." The group then called 911, provided a description of the man, his license plate and photographs of his van.
"You see it happen in movies so you take experience from the movie and use it in real life," said JV football player Peyton Coffman. Police were amazed by how maturely the young men handled the situation.
The boys credit their act to the sense of teamwork and camaraderie they developed on the field. "Definitely because usually we work as a team on the football field but as one after," said Coffman.
