Freddie Mercury is a rock legend whose immaculate, powerful vocals have the potential to send chills down anyone’s spine.
But aside from his success with British band Queen, another thing that made him a true musician was his love for genres that extended far beyond rock music. This led to a memorable collaboration with Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé.
After falling in love with Caballé’s talent, Mercury jumped at the opportunity to work with her. The two recorded the song “Barcelona,” which also became the theme song for the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona (Caballé's hometown). The two went on to record an album together by the same name. Released in 1988, the crossover album also featured the song “How Can I Go On," which you'll see them passionately perform in the video below.
Had Mercury not passed away in 1991, Caballé believes the two would've continued making music together. She said they spoke of recording "Phantom of the Opera."
"It's a moving thing — I knew he was in bed and very weak, and I wanted to surprise him by recording 'Phantom,'" Caballé said about her dear friend, according to the Guardian. "I phoned him and put the speaker near the phone and played it. He was very happy. He said, 'Thank you, Montsy, I wanted very much to hear it.' And that was my last time I talked to him."
