It’s So Cold In Certain Parts Of Russia That People’s Eyelashes Are Freezing Solid

It's been a frigid winter in the northeast. Recently, it's been really cold in New York. Some days, the high temperature only reaches single digits.

Residents across all five boroughs have been bundling up with jackets, coats, scarves, and gloves.

I've been having a hard time dealing with the low temperatures, but this is nothing compared to the frigid weather in parts of Russia.

In fact, certain areas of Russia are so cold that people's eyelashes are literally freezing solid.

The remote village of Oymyakon in Russia's Sakha Republic is one of the coldest permanently inhabited towns on the planet. Oymyakon came to be around World War II, when an airfield was built there.

Today, the population numbers just 500. Tourists visit the town to find out what it's like in the extreme cold, and when their eyelashes freeze, they definitely see how cold it can be.

The town of Oymyakon is so cold that it regularly dips into very low temperatures.

Last year, the town installed a digital thermometer for tourists, but it got so cold this year that it broke.

So, just how cold are we talking?

Well, a few days ago it fell to -62°C, which is about -80°F.

While most of us try to stay inside when it drops below freezing (32°F), the citizens of Oymyakon continue to go about their normal lives.

And yes, they still go to work.

Oymyakon is located in the Russian region of Sakha, also known as Yakutia.

Nearby Yakutsk is the closest large city, with a population of about 270,000.

There's only one major city that's colder than Yakutsk: Norilsk.

Although Norilsk is colder in general, Yakutsk has colder temperatures in the winter.

Even in Yakutsk, which is considerably warmer than Oymyakon, it gets cold enough for people's eyelashes to freeze.

People aren't the only ones affected by the cold in these areas of Russia.

Animals also have to deal with the dipping temperatures, but their bodies are thankfully more equipped to handle it.

Can you imagine what it would feel like to have ice crystals form on your eyelashes? It can't be comfortable, that's for sure!
