If you’re someone who has given birth, it might seem highly unlikely to you that someone could walk around for nine months and be completely unaware that they are pregnant. Well, this clip from TLC UK’s I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant showcases a different side of things.
In 1975, Pat met the love of her life, Tom, while playing softball. The two immediately felt a strong chemistry between them and dated for over four years before getting engaged in 1979.
They both grew up in large families and wanted kids of their own, but they weren’t planning for a baby anytime soon because they were enjoying being on their own too much.
In the fall of 1979, Pat noticed quite a drastic change in her periods. She and Tom habitually used contraception, but she took note that her periods, which were always quite heavy and lengthy, were a lot lighter and didn’t last as long.
During the winter of 1980, she felt relatively normal but recalls an instance when she was traveling on a plane and felt lightheaded and proceeded to get sick to her stomach after she landed. By the springtime that year, she got involved in her usual seasonal sports but noticed that she had gained a little bit of weight around her stomach.
In June of 1980, just a few weeks before their wedding, Pat started experiencing excruciating stomach cramps. She tried to wait it out, but she soon called Tom to take her to the hospital.
After waiting some time in the ER to be looked at, she was finally examined by a doctor, who almost immediately gathered through administering a pelvic exam that she was indeed pregnant and in labor.
