Lily was a single mom to her baby girl Candace after her former partner refused to acknowledge their daughter. After a year or so, Lily met a kind man named Derek, whom she quickly fell in love with.
Lily wasn’t sure she was ready to commit again, but as soon as she saw Derek and his undying support and love for little Candace, she knew that they were going to be a family. When Derek took Candace to school, teachers could not believe that he was not Candace’s biological father because the two simply lit up around one another.
Both Lily and Derek worked outside of the home, so they routinely sent Candace to school on the bus. Lily’s office was on the other side of town, so it was usually Derek who dropped Candace off at the bus stop before he went to work.
One day when dropping Candace off at the bus stop, Derek noticed that his stepdaughter seemed upset. He tried to get her to open up, but when she wouldn’t, he wished her a good day at school and just hoped for the best.
The next day, Derek paid close attention and waited to see what happened when Candace stepped onto the bus. She asked the bus driver if she could sit near the front because she got car sick and the man turned around and yelled at her.

At that point, Derek stepped onto the bus and motioned for Candace to come with him. He dropped Candace off at school himself that day and then went looking for the bus driver when she was safely in class. When he found him, he was surprised to find that he knew the man and so did Candace.
