Kate Hudson Revealed She And Mom Goldie Hawn Have Talked Openly About Sex Since Childhood

There are plenty of reasons to look up to Goldie Hawn. For one, she's the perfect icon for people who aren't all that keen on the idea of marriage. Even without making it official, Goldie and partner Kurt Russell have been happy together for almost 40 years.

"I was 21 and he was 16," Goldie said during a BBC Radio 4 interview when asked about how their love began. "I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."

In Hollywood, long-lasting relationships are especially rare. However, Goldie has always seemed down to earth. That's probably one of the reasons why she has such an open relationship with daughter Kate Hudson. It's been no secret that Goldie and Kate are extremely close, but Kate admits it's a next-level bond.

For one, they talk about sex, which the two of them shared in an issue of People's The Beautiful Issue, for which they both appear on the cover along with Kate's baby. Typically, that's a topic that's off-limits for parents and kids. But it's different with Goldie. She knows that it's a healthy part of life. But you probably don't know that Kate was on the younger side when her mom first brought it up.

Goldie shares children Kate and Oliver with her ex-husband Bill Hudson. With Kurt, she shares a son named Wyatt Hawn Russell. She's living proof that sometimes, you don't get it right with love — but there's always something to learn from the experience. She's had a wonderful relationship with all of her children, even though they've come from two different relationships.

In an interview with People magazine held back in February of 2020, Kate admitted that she learned a lot about sex from her mom. "What did you teach me about sex? There are so many things," Kate said. "We talk a lot about sex. Surprisingly." Supposedly, the chats started happening back when Kate was just a kid.

“I said, ‘I want you to understand something about Mommy,'" Goldie responded. "'I’m not a prude. I love sex.'" Kate added, "And then she said, ‘Sex is so much fun. But it’s better when it’s with one person.’ And that was a good lesson." However, the talks got more mature as Kate grew older.

"You were trying to engage and asking like what was going on with me sexually," Kate said. "I was like, ‘Mom, let’s just say that I’m kind of a sexually-oriented type of personality.’ And she goes, ‘Please, I have known that since you were two years old.’ I was like, ‘Mom!'"

That sort of topic, in general, is often a little awkward for parents and kids to have. Sex is a part of life — without it, none of us would be here. However, when you're learning about your own sexuality, it can be awkward having your mom there. Perhaps that's why Goldie made sure Kate know she was cool with the topic from the very beginning.

Of course, getting Goldie to stay in the room for a set amount of time was challenging. According to Kate (and Goldie herself), she's always on the go. However, she managed to make time to have these discussions with Kate about life — after Kate managed to lock her down, that is.

“I was always like [she turns her head side to side], ‘Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom. Mom! Mom,'” Kate told People while laughing. “You know, she was just constantly moving. I’d sit and that’s when I could really talk to Mom — when she was working out. Once we had a whole conversation about men. And I sat there like, ‘Wow, that’s my mom.'”

As far as love goes, Kate had a great example of a loving relationship by watching her mom and Kurt Russell. According to Kurt, they were connected ever since their first date in the '80s, which involved the two of them breaking into a home that Goldie had bought but didn't have the keys for yet.

They worked together on the 1987 film Overboard, which — according to Goldie — brings back a lot of feelings any time they try to rewatch it. "You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love," she told James Corden. "It was really something to be able to watch that."

Kate Hudson has also had her fair share of loves. For seven years, she was married to musician Chris Robinson, with whom she shares a son. Her second long-term partner was musician Matthew Bellamy. Sadly, although they also had a son together, that relationship didn't work out, either. These days, she's attached to musician Danny Fujikawa, who was her friend for well over a decade before things turned romantic.

Kate and Danny had a daughter together. But perhaps she's learning a lesson or two from her mom. She hasn't been quick to talk about marriage with Danny, even though the two seem to be in a great place right now. Even the 2020 stay-at-home orders didn't mess with their relationship.

"He makes me feel beautiful every single moment of the day, even when we have fought," she said to People. "I still feel loved. His devotion to the family unit makes me feel safe and confident and secure." She even told the publication a lesson that Goldie had told her, in regard to healthy relationships — "don’t you ever let a man dim your light."

"Mom always said to me, don’t ever let that happen, no matter what it is that’s going on in the relationship," she explained. "The second he starts to dim your light, you need to go inward and try to like really, in the most loving way, look at the choices that you’re making — not blaming anybody else just looking inward."

All of Kate's kids are lucky to have Goldie as a grandmother. It seems like she's open, fun, and willing to discuss any topic that comes to mind. Surely, there are a bunch of life lessons that'll help them all down the road, just like they helped Kate.
