For many women, pregnancy is a journey during which a mother and her unborn child bond. Over the course of nine months, her love grows as the child does, and by the time he or she is born, the two already have a physical and emotional bond like no other.
But for women who cannot physically have children and must resort to a surrogate to carry a baby, the fact that they can't experience this beautiful journey can be painful. They still love their child like any other mom, but a part of them wishes they could have had the full experience.
This is not exactly the case of Maddie Coleman. She cannot carry a baby because she is at risk for the growth of tumors, but she and her husband still wanted to have a baby.
Hiring a surrogate was on the more expensive side.
So her mother, Megan Barker, stepped in to help. She offered to be her daughter's surrogate and to carry her grandchild. She gave birth to and raised three healthy children, and the 48-year-old was healthy enough to sustain the pregnancy.
For nine months, Barker carried her daughter and son-in-law's son — her grandson — then gave birth to him. She immediately handed him off to his parents, who were there every step of the way during the pregnancy.
It certainly made the bond between the new grandma and new grandson strong, but it also made the bond between mother and daughter much stronger!
