Christian singer Kelley Mooney is receiving a lot of praise after debuting a spiritual adaptation of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Accompanied by the Chorale Voce dell'Anima — led by Monette Gould at the Monument Lefebvre in Memramcook, Canada — Mooney sang the chilling number and even got a standing ovation from the audience.
Even if you've heard the song a hundred times, sometimes a rendition has such a beautiful twist that makes it even better than the classic — like Barbra Streisand's "Love Me Tender" cover or this stripped down version of Taylor Swift's "Style."
Mooney's song tells the true Easter story as found in the bible — the story of Jesus' crucifixion and his resurrection from the dead. No matter what your beliefs, these moving lyrics will touch your soul. A few select lyrics include:
A crown of thorns placed on His head
He knew that He would soon be dead
He said did you forget me Father did you?
They nailed Him to a wooden cross
Soon all the world would feel the loss
Of Christ the King before His Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
He hung His head and prepared to die
Then lifted His face up to the sky
Said I am coming home now Father to you
A reed which held His final sip
Was gently lifted to his lips
He drank His last and gave His soul to glory
This is a beautiful rendition. And just wait until you hear the children's chorus kick in — that will give you chills! The music, just as with the original, speaks to your heart.
I love the original song by Leonard Cohen and thought it couldn't get any better…until I heard Mooney's Easter version. It is every bit as heartfelt and inspiring every time I hear it.
