An Entire Connecticut Town — Including All Of Its Ghosts — Is For Sale

We all do a little property daydreaming from time to time — I personally fantasize about buying a beautiful desert getaway or a sunny beachfront property at least once a day.

How fun would it be to buy a beautiful old home, fix it up a little then spend your time soaking up all the magic and history inside of it?

Well, according to this real estate listing, you can have that and then some — if you buy this small mill town in Connicticut!

This little Victorian village called Johnsonville is centuries old and has a pretty interesting and harrowing history behind it.

But, in addition to all of the beautiful old properties, you would also be buying some of their very first tenants — well, their ghosts that is!

The picturesque little village has so much opportunity for whoever buys it — as long as they don't mind a few friendly ghosts.

If you are looking for some serious peace and quiet, then this Connicticut mill town may be perfect for you.

Established in 1802, Johnsonville has plenty of cute victorian homes and beautiful views of an open lake.

It was also home to the Neptune Twine and Cord Mill, that manufactured binding rope for fishing.

“Back in the day, the mills would create their own towns to house their employees to keep them safe and close by,” explained property holder Sherri Milkie to Zillow.

“There were houses and a little church and school [in Johnsonville].”

The cute, quaint mill thrived until 1972 when it was struck by lighting and caught fire.

The damage left the town completely deserted until aerospace manufacturer Raymond Schmitt, who bought all the acreage, restored it to its formal glory.

He even brought in other antique buildings from other parts of the country and invited people in to see the sights and host weddings.

But when Schmitt died in 1998, some of the estates were sold off, while others were left to decay.

At first, a management company bought the space with the intent of turning it into a picturesque retirement community.

But then the economy faltered and plans for the community diminished, which left it empty once again.

Now the whole property is for sale including four Victorian-era houses, a school, a church, an old post office, retail buildings, and a restaurant.

Whoever purchases it wouldn't just be getting an old property, they would be getting an entire community with years and years worth of history.

But that's not all they would be getting — the property also allegedly comes with a few of its original community members.

According to Zillow, bodies were customarily laid out before they were buried in one of the house's parlors.

People who have visited the house claim to have seen plenty of ghosts, specifically in that one room.

Some have even seen Schmitt’s ghost around the property, lovingly haunting the community he helped bring back to life.

So if you don't mind a few little haunts from time to time, the property would be a perfect space to relax and call your own — or open up to other people!

The property seriously holds so much potential, whether you are looking to start up a little commercial endeavor or restore a little part of history.

The town also offers a lot of possibilities for frights and spooks — imaginr how much of a hit it would be around Halloween.

“This is an area that’s really popular for tourism,” says Milkie.

“I could see someone opening a local brewpub, because there’s lots of open space for growing hops. You could also monopolize on having the lake with some rides, or open a farm-to-table restaurant and bed-and-breakfast featuring organic and homegrown vegetables.”
