Christine and Gary Newman were the perfect couple. For three decades, they lived a happy and loving life with their three kids and six grandchildren.
But in 2015, life changed in a horrifying instant. Gary, a builder, had been attacked by a fly while working outside one afternoon. At first, he didn't think much of it and continued his work.
Later that day, Gary told Christine he wasn't feeling well and headed off to bed. Hours later, Christine was horrified to wake up to find him having a seizure beside her.
After four days in the hospital, doctors realized that the fly that bit Gary was a dangerous and bloodsucking Blandford fly, which are most commonly found in Europe.
The fly bite had infected Gary with the herpes virus and a case of encephalitis — a rare but serious condition that causes inflammation in the brain.
Three weeks later, Gary was on a strict treatment plan with antibiotics and back at home. But Christine, his wife of 30 years, was dumbfounded to discover he had no idea who she was… and it wasn't a case of Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
