IKEA’s Hilarious ‘Let’s Relax’ Commercial Promotes Family Time Without Phones

Today, it seems like everyone has a mobile phone readily at hand. You can’t walk two feet without bumping into someone with one, and while that may be good for making quick calls or following GPS when you’re in a bind, it isn’t always a good thing at the dinner table.

Whether there’s a strict mute button rule or you’ve banned phones from the table entirely, those pesky devices still manage to disrupt the family meal.

That’s why IKEA recently released this absolutely hilarious PSA featuring a typical family from the 18th century. They’re all sitting down at dinner when Dad stops his daughter just before she bites into an apple.

Everyone looks pained, and the reason why becomes clear almost immediately: an artist must paint the meal on their table before anyone can eat.

Many PSAs are sentimental and even gut-wrenching. There was that chilling New Zealand video on the dangers of speeding, and the Budweiser commercial on drinking and driving. These just convey messages in a different, but no less effective way.

As the IKEA video continues, several men race around town showing the painting off in order to get "likes." It’s meant to mimic the way we post pictures on social media — most notably, Instagram — and how we’re so concerned with how others perceive us when the people we love and care about are sitting right there.

What a clever way of raising awareness about this modern issue!
