Being broke is a very scary predicament to be in. It could mean you are scrambling to pay rent or don't even have a house to live in.
Yet, the phrase "I'm so broke" is often used by people who, well, aren't broke. Let's put it this way: If you can afford to buy Starbucks coffee every morning, you aren't broke. And same goes for those who have an expensive gym membership or spend tons of money getting their hair done. Of course they too can be tight on money once in a while, but they certainly aren't "so broke."
