The Story Behind Mexico’s Chilling Island Of The Dolls

On the outskirts of Mexico City there's a small spooky island where hundreds of dirty dolls hang from trees. Some believe this area in Xochimilco, Mexico is haunted by spirits.

The island was once the home of a local farmer named Don Julian Santana Barrera. In the 1950s, Don Julian reportedly witnessed a young girl's corpse lying in the canal. Close to her body was also a doll. Upset by what he saw, Don Julian thought he'd honor the girl by hanging the doll on a tree.

Shortly after, things took a rapid turn for Don Julian. As the tale goes, the traumatized man believed the little girl possessed the doll because it would make noise and move on its own. For whatever reason, this encouraged Don Julian to start hanging more dolls on his island. He even thought the spirit of other deceased children would enter the dolls.

Like the abandoned house in Russia filled with teddy bears, Don Julian's island was eventually taken over by these dolls, whose blank stares are almost terrifying.

It's hard to be sure if the haunting was real or just a figment of Don Julian's imagination. But, the man's death (explained at 1:30)  has many believing the current tourist attraction could certainly be haunted.
