Parents are expected to set a good example for their children, and most try their best to teach them right from wrong. But for some kids, family life isn't as positive and nurturing as it should be. Sometimes one or both parents engage in criminal activity and end up in jail. These children have a higher chance of following in their footsteps and being incarcerated, too.
But some children break the terrible cycle and do well in school, stay out of trouble, and eventually sustain healthy relationships with peers. One mom hopes that her son, Jamari, will be one of these law-abiding citizens.
Jamari's dad has been in federal prison for participating in organized crime. He has a "long history" with the Greenville, NC, Police Department. But when officers heard what Jamari thought about them, they didn't hesitate to call his mom.

Jamari's mom is afraid that he'll grow up to be like his dad: a criminal who has been in federal prison. She's also afraid that, because of his father's past, he has been conditioned to antagonize law enforcement officers.
But Jamari doesn't plan to get involved in crime, at least not in the way many expect him to. Jamari wants to be an officer, but not just any kind: he wants to be a GPD SWAT officer!
Officers at the Greenville, NC, Police Department heard about his big dream and decided that they would give him a special gift for his seventh birthday.
For a day, the lucky little boy got be to a SWAT team member.
The Greenville, NC, Police Department and Jamari's mom must be so proud of him. The little boy's big dreams can become a reality, with the love and support from his community!
The police department writes on their Facebook page, "Next time our SWAT team needs back-up, we know who to call. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAMARI!!!"
