Every decade over the course of the past hundred or so years has left its own cultural imprint on the world, each of which is beautiful and interesting for its own unique reasons.
When we think of the 1920s, it conjures up fringe dresses, The Great Gatsby, the smokey sound of early jazz. Likewise, all you have to say is “ '80s fashion” to be inundated with images of poofy skirts, blush by the bucket, and big piles of teased hair.
The 1960s, on the other hand, are a little bit harder to pin down, style-wise. On the one hand you’ve got groovy mod boy bands like the Animals, on the other you have prim and proper aesthetics that show up in the architecture of the era, like these compact and futuristic campers. And of course, you can’t forget the Counterculture.
Colloquially referred to as “hippies,” the Counterculture was part aesthetic revolution, and part political movement, characterized by some of the most iconic cultural shifts of all time. And at the forefront of this incredible moment of history? Talented, groundbreaking musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Ravi Shankar, and, of course, Janis Joplin.
Janis was one of the most gripping presences in the music industry over the course of her brief, intense life. Though she passed away at just 27 years old, she built a legacy in that time, known for her impressive, rasping vocals and phenomenal stage presence. Now, nearly 50 years after her death, her songs still hold all the spine-tingling authority that they did when she took the stage in Sweden in 1969.
