John Stamos Almost Left ‘Full House’ Because He Was Jealous Of One Of His Child Costars

John Stamos is getting honest about a time he almost let his ego get in the way. And you'd be surprised to find out that a 5-year-old Jodie Sweetin was the reason why! During an appearance on Hot Ones, the 59-year-old actor admitted that he almost quit Full House because Jodie seemed to grab more attention.

John shared that the he expected the show to be like another show that focused more on the adult characters and less on the kids. "It was pitched to me as a Bosom Buddies … with, you know, a couple of kids in the background," he told Sean Evans between rounds of hot wings. "We did a table read of it, and I was the star."

But unfortunately, he was in for something much different. Those kids that he thought would simply be in the background, were actually a central part of the show.

And to John's surprise, Jodie captured a whole lot of attention. "We sit down, and we started reading, and Jodie Sweetin, who plays Stephanie, reads her lines, and people are dying laughing. I mean screaming," he shared. "I was like, 'What's happening here?'"

"They couldn't even hear my lines, they were laughing so hard at her," he went on. At the time that the show started, Jodie was only 5. But as time went on, she quickly became a fan favorite.

John explained that he almost stormed out of the table read. He even called his agent demanding to be taken off the show. Even though his agent calmed him and encouraged him to continue on with Full House, John was unhappy on set for a long time.

"I fought it for a long time," he said. But eventually, he realized the impact that the show had on the culture at the time.

"I finally said, 'What am I doing?' It's a beautiful show we built with sweetness and kindness," John shared. "There was no central character on that show is what I realized. The central character was love and we were the best representation of a loving family, not a 'normal' family. And it was the new normal, now an unconventional family."

Full House ran from 1987 to 1995. Fuller House, a spin-off of the original show, now features a shifted focus on the life of the grown-up kids, including a grown Jodie.
