Juniper French was born on April 12, 2011, and her life started out extremely scary for both her and her family.
She was early, only 23 weeks old, and weighed in at 1 lb. 4 oz.
The doctors called this "the gray zone." They told Juniper's parents, Kelley Benham and Tom French, that there was an 80% chance that she would either die or develop severe disabilities for the rest of her life.
The doctors listed off possible scenarios including cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, paralysis, living on a ventilator, and/or living with feeding tubes forever.
Throughout the first part of Juniper's life, her parents were terrified about what would happen, but after every time she stopped breathing, she started again.
She gained strength, and she continued to grow. Gradually, her parents found hope that she would be okay.
Today, she's 3 years old, and she's healthy. She's up to speed socially, even exceeding some expectations. However, the journey and trauma that she started with might have long-term effects.
So, although she may be healthy and happy now, her parents still worry every day.
Could she someday turn around and get sick again? Doctors don't even know the answer. With faith and hope, we pray she remains healthy!
