When you think about saving the environment, huge trucks are usually some of the last things to come to mind. But workers in Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine in Salt Lake City, Utah, are changing that with a massive dump truck called the Komatsu 930 SE. The tires alone are 12.5 feet in diameter, and the entire truck is 29 feet wide and 51 feet long. They're so big, they have to be assembled on-site at the mine: a process that takes over two weeks. But believe it or not, these monster work trucks are better for the earth than a lot of the vehicles you see on the street.
We've seen a lot of impressive trucks in the past, such as this one that was actually transformed into a house on wheels. But the Komatsu is completely changing the game when it comes to work vehicles. It can carry up to 320 tons at a time, and when it's fully loaded, the truck tips the scales at over a million pounds.
Adding to the impressive nature of this vehicle is the fact that it's a hybrid. Its electric generator is powered by a combustion engine, and combined with the truck's electric motors, it can reduce emissions by up to 50 percent. Just like this super-smart truck design by Samsung that helps prevent head-on collisions on the road, the Komatsu is a vehicle that gets the job done while making the world a better place.
Check out this incredible timelapse video of one of these trucks being built and see for yourself just how massive they are. Once you see it next to the "small" trucks that are constructing it, you won't be surprised to learn that the Komatsu is as large as a two-story house!
