When five-time Argentinian surf champion Matt Passeri was competing in the 2015 Argentinian Surf Championship, he seemed to be a sure thing.
All bets were on him to steal the show again. Hundreds of people came to watch him compete and to witness the surfer's magnetic talent. However, before the competition even started, Passeri was disqualified — though I'd say no one was disappointed he didn't win that day.
When I saw why he wasn't allowed to compete: beautiful.
It all started when Passeri saw Nicolas Gallegos sitting in his wheelchair on the beach.
Gallegos had been a paraplegic since he was 18 years old. He had always dreamed of surfing and is one of Passeri's biggest fans.
When Passeri sees Gallegos, he does something baffling that leaves the judges confused.
How society treats its people with disabilities is always a barometer for that culture's compassion. People couldn't help but be moved by seeing a fast food worker take the time to feed a woman who was unable to do it herself.
Due to the contest rules, they are forced to remove Passeri from the Surf Championship. Yet, it was no skin off of Passeri's back. In fact, he said that though he was eliminated from the competition this was the "greatest victory of his career."
See why Passeri put his entire career on the line to do this incredible thing for Gallegos in the video below!
