A mother in the United Kingdom named Melanie Williams is spreading awareness for skin cancer by posting a photo on social media of what she thought was a fungus infection.
“See that on my thumb? Do you know what it is? It's skin cancer,” she wrote in a July Facebook post, which was shared more than 100,000 times. “This grew from nothing in a matter of weeks. I thought it was just a fungal infection or a wart.”
Williams, who said she’s fortunate the melanoma hadn’t spread, had the cancer removed last week along with a portion of her thumb.
Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, kills almost 10,000 people a year. When found early, however, melanoma is nearly 100 percent curable. Doctors recommend that people self-examine their bodies to check for any abnormal moles, blemishes, or freckles on the skin.
Williams hopes to encourage others to look for signs of melanoma on their body and have it removed before it’s too late.
“I don't want your sympathy, I want more awareness. Therefore, please go and get any changes or growths on your skin checked out, please tell people around you to get checked as well,” she wrote. "So please, don't leave comments about how brave I am or how sorry you are, instead take that time to share this or tell someone they need to get checked or make that phone call to the doctors for yourself."
