Paralyzed and Pregnant follows the incredible story of Michelle Carston. Michelle sustained a diving injury on vacation at the age of 23, leaving her spinal cord permanently damaged and quadriplegic.
When she first had her accident, doctors knew Michelle was paralyzed from the neck down. Despite the fact they told her she would never be able to feel anything again, Michelle was determined and gradually regained limited feeling and function. Still, she had to relearn everything, from how to eat to how to function while bound to her wheelchair.
By the time Michelle was in her mid-30s, she and her husband Peter were expecting a baby boy — but the pregnancy was not without its risks. Michelle was used to all sorts of medical issues, like blood clots and infections, but pregnant proved to be the hardest challenge of all. To ensure a healthy baby, Michelle was on mandatory bed rest for eight months. She had to undergo blood transfusions and daily hydrations. Peter stood by her side the entire time, knowing exactly what he had signed up for when they married.
During the delivery, Michelle was susceptible to fatal complications from the contractions, because of her body's inability to communicate from her brain to her spinal cord. "It's always in the back of my mind, what if I came home without both of you?" Peter said.
