I give my best friend a lot of grief for all the misheard song lyrics she's interpreted over the years. But I have to admit, I've been just as guilty when it comes to more than a few of the commonly flubbed lines listed below.
Ever since I saw my mom crack up when I incorrectly sang the Elton John song in #2, I've been quicker to look up the right words from a reliable source to any new tune I really love. Whether the singer has a bad habit of mumbling or we just aren't listening as closely as we thought, it's all too easy to get confused when it comes to certain popular songs.
Take a look at some commonly misheard song lyrics below to see if you've been singing along to one of your favorite hits all wrong. These are definitely great for a laugh!

1. "Purple Haze" By Jimi Hendrix
Wrong: "'Excuse me while I kiss this guy."
Right: "Excuse me while I kiss the sky."
This is probably one of the most commonly confused lyrics of all time, but Jimi reportedly had a good sense of humor about it and would even pretend to kiss his fellow bandmates on stage while performing.
2. "Tiny Dancer" By Elton John
Wrong: "Hold me closer, Tony Danza."
Right: "Hold me closer, tiny dancer."
Yep, this is the one I mixed up, much to my mother's entertainment. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one, at least.
3. "I Can See Clearly Now" By Johnny Nash
Wrong: "I can see clearly now, Lorraine is gone."
Right: "I can see clearly now, the rain is gone."
I'm not sure who people thought Lorraine was or why it would be such a relief to see her go, but this is one misheard lyric that continues to confuse listeners today.
4. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" By AC/DC
Wrong: "Dirty deeds done with sheep."
Right: "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap."
Though the band is known for their edgier rock-and-roll antics, they weren't being quite as raunchy as folks thought when they misheard this one.
5. "Shaft" By Isaac Hayes
Wrong: "He's a carpet-cleaning man, and no one understands him but his woman."
Right: "He's a complicated man, and no one understands him but his woman."
Apparently listeners thought Shaft needed a side gig to pay the bills by cleaning carpets.
6. "Bad Moon Rising" By Creedence Clearwater Revival
Wrong: "There's a bathroom on the right."
Right: "There's a bad moon on the rise."
Lead singer John Fogerty has been known to purposely flub the line and point in the direction of a venue's restrooms during shows.
7. "Money For Nothing" By Dire Straits
Wrong: "Money for nothing and chips for free."
Right: "Money for nothing and chicks for free."
Honestly, I would be fine with an endless supply of chips for free, but that wasn't exactly what the band had in mind.
8. "We Will Rock You" By Queen
Wrong: "Kicking your cat all over the place."
Right: "Kicking your can all over the place."
Rest assured that Freddie Mercury and his bandmates were in no way condoning animal violence in this popular anthem.
9. "Living On A Prayer" By Bon Jovi
Wrong: "It doesn’t make a difference if we’re naked or not."
Right: "It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not."
This is another one that slipped me up the first few times I heard it, but that might have more to do with the hunky lead singer.
10. "I'm A Believer" By The Monkees
Wrong: "Then I saw her face, now I'm gonna leave her."
Right: "Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer."
This gives the quaint love song penned by Neil Diamond a whole new meaning, making one wonder how bad her face could have really looked.
11. "More Than A Woman" By The Bee Gees
Wrong: "Bald-headed woman, bald-headed woman to me."
Right: "More than a woman, more than a woman to me."
I went back to listen to this one because I couldn't believe anyone would actually think those were the words. Lo and behold, the mumbly vocals really do make it hard to tell!
12. "Blowin' In The Wind" By Bob Dylan
Wrong: "These ants are my friends, they’re blowin’ in the wind."
Right: "The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind."
The folk singer's gentle demeanor early on in his career might be why several listeners assumed he was talking about a kinship with the tiny creatures rather than providing "the answer."
