Lauren Knowles, a mother of two, was thrilled to take a positive pregnancy test at the age of 27.
But about eight weeks into her third pregnancy, Lauren experienced heavy spotting and was worried enough to rush to the doctor for a prenatal scan.
While checking to make sure she was 100% healthy, doctors made a very shocking discovery. Lauren's pregnancy was a "molar pregnancy," meaning the unborn baby was actually a cluster of cells known as gestational trophoblastic disease.
And Lauren's particular mass was cancerous.
The tumor grew inside her womb the same way a baby would. The same hormones were produced by this mass, which is why her pregnancy tests kept coming back positive. And at 17 weeks, the mass was the same size as a growing fetus!
Lauren had the cancerous tissue removed and began rounds of chemotherapy, but the tumor only continued to grow — and her health continued to decline.
