Mom’s Son Is Killed In Line Of Duty Before He Finishes Degree, Then She Puts On Cap And Gown

As much as we want our men and women in uniform to come home, sometimes many of them don't. It is a tragedy many people have to live with: friends lose friends, children lose parents, and parents lose their sons and daughters.

Phyllis McGeath is one of these parents. McGeath, 54, of Arlington, Texas, suffered such a tragedy when her son, 25-year-old Marine Corporal Phillip McGeath was killed in action in Afghanistan back in 2012.

She received a Gold Star and a load of grief she thought she wouldn't get past.

However, it was the need to fulfill one of her son's unfinished goals that gave her the drive to continue on.

Phillip wanted to earn his Bachelor's degree when he returned home, but he did not.

Instead, his mom enrolled at UT Arlington, with the goal of fulfilling his dream.

This past Friday, Phyllis did just that.

The mom worked tirelessly to earn the degree her son never could, and in the end, she walked up to the podium to receive her degree, earned in Phillip's name.

"I wish it was Phillip here…I wish it was his name being read at commencement…He is always with me internally, and he’d be proud," she said to CBS DFW.

Phyllis has already enrolled and been accepted into a master's degree program, with her son's goal becoming her life's passion.
