Public transportation is a wonderful thing. It gets you from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time for a fairly agreeable price. If you don't have a car or if you're on vacation, taking the bus or train is definitely the way to go.
However, there are some rules you need to follow when you ride public transportation, for the sake of your fellow passengers as well as for your own safety. Being courteous and self-aware are both very important when it comes to public spaces.
These 10 things should never be practiced by anyone on public transportation, no matter what! There's no excuse for rude manners, and you don't want to potentially injure yourself, either!
Have you ever done any of these 10 bad things on public transportation? I know that I never will again!

1. Forget Your Headphones

Listening to music on the daily commute is, for a lot of people, essential. If you forget your headphones, you'll have no choice but to ride in silence.
2. Fall Asleep
![asleep.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/asleep.jpg)
You never want to fall asleep on public transit as it makes you vulnerable to theft and generally puts you in danger. You want to have your wits about you when you're riding any kind of public transportation.
3. Leave Your Mark
![tagged.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/tagged.jpg)
It's tempting to leave your signature on a train car or a bus seat, but defacing public property is an act of vandalism. Not only is it against the law, but it ruins a public space that you share with many other people.
4. Take Up More Than One Seat
![manspreading.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/manspreading.jpg)
If it's during busy hours, you need to keep your things contained within one seat. Don't be the person who's taking up three seats with your shopping bags — or your legs!
5. Lean Against The Pole
![subway-1.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/subway-1.jpg)
When you're on a crowded train or bus, the pole is needed for folks to hold so they don't go flying when the vehicle jostles about. If you lean on the pole, you're making the ride much more difficult for others.
6. Forget To Pay
![metrocard.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/metrocard.jpg)
When you get on a bus or a train, don't take the chances of not paying the fee or buying a transit card. Not only are you not fulfilling your duty as a citizen of your town, but you can get hit with some pretty huge fines, especially if you're abroad.
7. Show Excessive PDA
![Artopia](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pda1.jpg)
There's nothing wrong with showing someone that you love them — unless you're in a very public space. Showing too much PDA in a close-quartered area like a train or a bus can make your fellow travelers very uncomfortable.
8. Stand In The Way
![doors.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/doors.jpg)
It is nice to be right next to the doors so that you can have a speedy getaway at your stop, but blocking the doors for everyone else is a big no-no. Step aside when it's not your stop and let people pass through.
9. Have A Loud Private Conversation
![talking.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/talking.jpg)
Sure, your commute may seem like a great time to catch up with your closest friends on the phone, but when you talk about deeply personal happenings, you have to remember that everyone on the train has ears and can hear your entire conversation.
10. Rub Your Eyes
![eyes-1.jpg](https://littlethings.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/eyes-1.jpg)
There are tons of bacteria living on public transit, and the last thing you want to do is transfer them to your face. When you touch the subway or public transit poles, you need to wash your hands as soon as possible before scratching your face.
