After injury forced Derek Redmond to withdraw from the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he was given another shot to prove himself.
But, only moments into the 400m semi-final at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, he tore his hamstring and collapsed to the ground. His career was over.
Yet, Redmond did the unthinkable: Instead of being carried out with a stretcher, he decided to finish the race.
The beginning of the video is heartbreaking to watch; the British 400m record breaker stops running abruptly and collapses to the ground.
However, it is followed closely by an absolutely incredible moment at the :54 mark. Just wait until you see who runs out onto the track! The interaction between them will melt your heart.
“We started this thing together and now we’ll finish it together,” the 49-year-old runner recalled his father telling him in an article he wrote for the Daily Mail in 2012.
Redmond, now a motivational speaker, also received a standing ovation from the 65,000 people watching the race.
