1900s One-Room Schoolhouse Is Transformed Into A Humble Little Home

There’s something romantic and wistful about the idea of going to school in a one-room schoolhouse.

After all, it’s such a popular image in TV and film, we can practically feel the chalk in our hands and hear the school bell calling us to class, as we previously described in this back-to-school-themed trip down memory lane!

Of course, there aren’t many people left who remember what it was really like to go to school in one room à la Laura Ingalls Wilder. For most of us, at least in the public school system, it was more about big industrial brick buildings packed floor to ceiling with students.

Still, there may yet be an opportunity for all of us deprived products of the 20th century to harken back to the one-room schoolhouse days and experience the old-fashioned educational experience firsthand!

In Spokane, WA, a property recently hit the market that has its routes in a much simpler time for education, complete with many of the original details.

Scroll through the gallery below to check out the awesome property for yourself!

From the outside, this beautiful little structure is still the very image of an old-fashioned schoolhouse straight out of Little House on the Prairie.

Located in rural area near Spokane, WA, it would have certainly been isolated and rural when pioneers first started settling in this part of the west.

Spokane is still the central hub for many far-flung little towns, but 100 or 150 years ago, this kind of little schoolhouse most likely would have served students for miles around.

Inside, it still retains a lot of the character of an old-fashioned school.

The entryway is done in spare shiplap, and is washed a clean, bright white, except for a few red accents.

Meanwhile, there are still hooks down the wall and a rack across the doorway, making it easy to picture lots of hand-knit sweaters and book bags hanging in a row.

The bathroom retains the same color scheme as the rest of the house, and stands apart with one bold, red accent wall.

Aside from that one detail, it's a fairly standard space, but is well-equipped with clean, simple fixtures, and a big mirror.

Assuming this space was always the washroom, it looks a sight better than those green metal stalls most of us grew up with!

The red-and-white theme continues as you move into the main area: what would have been the "one room" in the "one-room schoolhouse."

It's a space much bigger than most folks' living room, and really serves as everything from dining room to family room to office, with a bedroom, too, as we'll see later.

The high-ceilinged area is flooded with light, and, once again, lined with shiplap.

There's no true bedroom built into the space, which is, after all, meant to have one main room, but there is an area sectioned away from the main room.

It's separated from the living room with folding screens, leaving just enough room for a cozy twin bed by a chalkboard wall, in keeping with the scholarly theme.

There's more sleeping space in an outbuilding on the property, but this is the main bedroom for the center space.

Another corner of the main room is taken up by a mock-up of a comfy study in a classroom setting.

Two armchairs flank a wood-burning stove, while the bedroom chalkboard continues running down the wall.

A classic wooden fan hangs from the high ceiling, while tall windows flood the room with light.

There's a small portion of the kitchen built into the main room, while the remaining utilities are kept in a narrow gallery kitchen just off the main room.

The stove and oven are in the main room, while the fridge, the storage space, and the countertops are off to the side.

It looks like the perfect clean cozy place for stowing after-school snacks!
