Lives can change in a split second.
Josh Spencer was driving a small motorcycle when a car slammed into him. After being hospitalized for three months, he underwent spinal surgery. "How can I still be a man when I'm half-paralyzed?" He asked himself at the time, struggling with what it meant to now be paraplegic.
And yet, Spencer went on to open his own business. He named it The Last Bookstore, and book lovers from all over have flocked to his Downtown Los Angeles location in search of a much-needed reading refuge.
"It's kind of a fantasy job for anybody that's really in love with all different kinds of books and loves finding buried treasure," Spencer says, as he sorts through tons of used books following a recent shipment.
Many people — not just businesses, but bookworms as well — donate their unwanted paperbacks, which Spencer will either sell or pass along to local hospitals and organizations in need.
Like Spencer, Raul Lemesoff created his own library on wheels to promote reading. There’s also the dad who built a beautiful bookshelf for the same reason.
He’s got a really good thing going with the aptly named The Last Bookstore. It just goes to show that there are many of us still out there (myself included!) who love reading.
There’s something magical about holding a physical copy of a book in your hands, or enjoying the distinct aroma of an old bookstore. Do you enjoy visiting bookstores, or are you more of a digital person?
