Many animals are actually smarter than we think. Parrots, in particular, have learned to mimic speech patterns and sounds. Some, like the African grey parrot, are even thought to be able to recognize the meanings of words and create simple sentences, which is pretty amazing.
Some animals, however, take that intelligence to a whole new level. The hyacinth macaw in this video, for instance, has taken some of his street smarts and turned it into a way to be pretty self-reliant.
On a beautiful Brazilian day, the macaw decides that he needs a quick shower to cool off. You might think he would try flying around to find an open bird bath or a stream, but not this clever bird. With the camera rolling, this brilliant, blue macaw decides to use his mighty beak to turn the faucet on himself!
The water starts pouring out and little birdie gets himself nice and wet. It looks like he even sneaks a quick drink in for good measure. It's a short clip, but it is so cool to see an animal being so unexpectedly self-reliant.
It's also a good reminder that — while they may get confused easily and don't always appear too smart — animals are much, much smarter than we assume them to be.
Nicely done, birdie. Next time, though, don't forget to turn off the water when you're done!
