Pit bulls are one of my favorite dog breeds. Yet, every year, thousands end up in animal shelters across the country.
Those statistics become even more heartbreaking when you consider that these sweet pups make such fantastic pets and lifelong friends — especially in the case of this brave pittie who saved her entire family from a terrifying house fire.
So when I discovered how one rescue dog fell in love with her human foster brother, making headlines in the process, I just had to share!
Maxie is a New York City pit bull who remains on the long and difficult journey from Manhattan Animal Care and Control to her ultimate forever home.
Rescued from the shelter after nearly being put down, she was then forced to leave her first foster home, as it just wasn't quite the right fit. Fortunately, not everybody had given up on poor Maxie, and the search for her forever family continued onwards. What happened next, though, was nothing short of a modern-day miracle.

After being placed in Manhattan Animal Care and Control, Maxie was worried that she would never find her forever home.
Thankfully, Second Chance Rescue placed the adorable pit bull with a foster family in the hopes that Maxie might have finally found a comfy spot to call her own.
Unfortunately for Maxie, this foster home wasn't quite the perfect fit, as Second Chance explains, "Both female dogs wanted to be top dog."
The sweetheart pup was downtrodden, but the rescue was determined to find Maxie the home of her dreams.
She was then placed in a second foster home. This time, however, she blew everyone away when she made an extra special friend: the family's 5-month-old baby boy.
The two immediately bonded, with Maxie becoming a surrogate parent, snuggling and playing with the baby boy all day long.
Her foster family couldn't be more honored to share their home with this fantastic dog.
"She has proven to be everything you would want in a pet and more," shares Second Chance Rescue.
After observing Maxie with the young boy, Second Chance and her temporary foster family have no doubt that she would be the perfect addition to any home.
Though she may take a moment to warm up to other furry friends, she has a proven track record of being an excellent companion to her human siblings.
“She truly enjoys the meaning of ‘family.’ Maxie is waiting for her happily ever after. Why not give Maxie the chance and make her a part of your life?” the organization shares.
