This 72-Year-Old Woman Is Saved From Silent Killer…By Her Pit Bull!

Messiah the Pit Bull not only makes for a great pet and companion, he can now also add the title of "hero" to his doggie resume.

Seventy-two-year-old Carol Hathaway of Hudson Falls, NY suffers from Type 2 diabetes, and on Oct. 6, her blood sugar dropped to dangerously low levels, the Glen Falls Post-Star reports.

Luckily, Messiah tried to revive her and drew attention to her housemate, Darrin Trombley, who was asleep at the time.

Darrin Trombley was awoken on the evening of Oct. 6 by cries from Carol's room, and when he went to investigate, he found her lying on her bed, incoherent, with Messiah whining and vigorously licking her face.

Darrin noticed that Messiah's tail wasn't wagging, and that he was smothering Carol in licks. He pulled the dog off of her and phoned Carol's daughter, who is a nurse, as well as the Fort Edward Emergency Squad.

Carol's daughter, Colleen, was shocked to find that her mother's glucose levels had dropped to 32, and by the time the emergency squad arrived, she had begun seizing with levels at 19. It seems that Messiah was highly sensitive to her condition and could tell that something was very wrong.

Carol regained consciousness sometime later after the EMTs administered emergency bags of glucose.

Many dogs are known to respond to their owners having epileptic seizures, and while researchers don't yet know for sure if they can detect diabetes, Messiah clearly could smell and sense that something was amiss.

Carol told the Post-Star that she "was stunned" that Messiah had alerted her housemate that she was in trouble.

“This dog has good sense,” she said.
