U.S. consumers purchase an average of 8.45 billion gallons of bottled water each year, according to statistics — and, rather than being recycled, about 75 percent of the empty plastic bottles end up in landfills and lakes where they may never fully decompose. Yet, contrary to popular belief, bottled water is wasteful and not any healthier for you than tap water.
As part of Earth Day — April 22 — it's time to take a close look at why we need to stop buying bottled water. Unless you live in an area with contaminated water sources, there truly is no need to purchase water bottles. Thankfully, most of us are not in those situations. There's a simple alternative to bottled water: Buy a stainless steel thermos…and use it.
If you happen to have some old plastic bottles still laying around, you can get creative, recycling them into something useful, like a broom or handy little containers.
And, if you don't like the way your local tap water tastes, there are inexpensive carbon filters that will turn most tap water sparkling fresh at a fraction of bottled water's cost!
In the video below, The Story of Bottled Water, one woman explains several truths to consider about bottled water that can help you become a healthier person and a smarter consumer. Just think of all the money you'll save by sipping strategically.
