Shawn Johnson East has had a very complicated past few weeks, and now she's been thrown yet another curveball.
It all started around early December, when she found out she was pregnant with her and husband Andrew East's second child. The couple are parents to 1-year-old Drew Hazel. The exciting news was eclipsed by some other shocking news when, hours later, the couple learned Andrew had tested positive for COVID-19.
Shawn and Andrew opened up about the experience in a YouTube video shared in mid-January. They described how tough it was to have such great news and then to have to isolate. Andrew also struggled with being away from Drew while quarantining in an area of their home. Thankfully, at the time the video was posted, Andrew seemed to have recovered from the virus without issue.
On Sunday, Shawn revealed that she has now tested positive for COVID-19. In the same post in her Instagram stories, she opened up about how Drew has been fighting off a respiratory virus of her own in the past few weeks.
Shawn Johnson East is having one of those tough times moms everywhere can relate to. Just when you think you've gotten through a rough patch, another thing pops up. It feels endless and exhausting when you're in it with no end in sight.
The 29-year-old mom to 15-month-old Drew Hazel East learned she was pregnant with her second child in early December.
Shawn shared the exciting news with her husband, Andrew. They were thrilled and started thinking about how to share their news with their loved ones before their plans got derailed. Andrew, who was due to travel on business, was diagnosed with COVID-19 after being tested ahead of his travel plans.
Andrew had to quarantine away from Shawn and Drew in an area of their home. Having to pump the breaks at such an exciting time was hard for him.
"We were in this time of celebration and we wanted to tell her parents and her friends, then I ended up having to self-isolate for 10 days," he said in a YouTube video where they shared what the experience was like.
"We were scared to begin with that you had COVID. We weren't sure if Drew had it, we weren't sure if I had it," Shawn shared.
"So I was calling her pediatrician, I was calling my OB. … I was like, 'What do we do? Do I need to worry about being pregnant?' especially early on in pregnancy. I got so scared of potentially increasing my risks of miscarriage."
It's been two weeks since that video came out. Thankfully, Andrew has since recovered and was able to get back to the family. But now it's his turn to tackle solo parenting as Shawn announced she was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Shawn shared a since-deleted post on her Instagram stories sharing her experience.
"Got my results back today and they came back positive for Covid," she wrote.
"Not going to lie… I'm nervous knowing I'm positive. It's been a long two weeks of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) with Drew and now this… my body is exhausted."
Shawn shared a list of reasons for her concern.
"1: I don't want to get my family sick. 2: I have asthma and have had it my entire life so this scares me a little extra. 3: had a very close family member fight for his life last month while battling Covid so it's a serious topic of concern/hits home in our household," she wrote.
"So far, I have a cough, terrible sore throat and headache. Fatigue for sure but… that's pregnancy haha," she continued.
"Not looking for any kind of [pity] party. Just a reminder to take care of yourself. Drink an extra water tonight and wash your hands."
"Praying so hard for all of those babies out there tonight (sappy mama here) and everyone fighting for their health," she later wrote in a separate post.
"Ok… this emotional mess of a human is going to try to sleep now. Love you all."
Here's hoping Shawn makes a quick recovery and the Easts have a better go of things from here on out.
