For more than 60 years, Don and Maxine Simpson of Bakersfield, CA were inseparable. The two met at a bowling alley after Don moved from North Dakota to Bakersfield for his career as a civil engineer. They volunteered together, adopted two children, and traveled the world.
Sixty years later, Don was at home when he took a bad fall. At the hospital, his health declined. His granddaughter brought Don to her home to recover. At the same time, the cancer Maxine had been battling for years quickly progressed. The two stayed in beds–side by side–in their granddaughter's home. They held hands across the empty space between their beds, and smiled.
Late one night, Maxine's cancer claimed her life. Within four hours of her death, Don passed as well. "'Til death do us part" was the only part of their vows they refused to keep.
