When you go for your ultrasound as a pregnant mommy-to-be, the hope is always to hear the heartbeat and great news about the upcoming birth.
Unfortunately, some moms and dads find out horribly unexpected news at those check-ins.
When Brad and Andrew van Rossum went for the routine 19-week ultrasound, they were shocked when the doctor found out that their baby boy had a very serious condition.
It was something called pulmonary atresia, a severe heart disorder that would change his life, and theirs.
Doctors prepared the couple for what would lie ahead for their baby Reid, once he was born. He'd have to have three major surgeries within his first few years of life, and his journey to health was not going to be simple or easy.
Within his first five days of life, he was put under anesthetic three times, but his parents kept faith in his survival.
The van Rossum's noticed one day that Reid's lips and skin looked even more discolored than usual, so they took him in.
It was time for the third surgery he needed, and after the surgery was over, they knew they did the right thing. After he recovered, they noticed how severely different his life could be now, and they couldn't be more ecstatic.
