The idea of Santa Claus has been around for years. He spreads joy to children all over the world during the Christmas season with his jolly red suit and flying reindeer as he delivers presents underneath the tree.
But according to a new study, allowing children to believe in Santa Claus is dangerous and potentially “harmful.”
The journal The Lancet Psychiatry claims that parents who encourage their children’s belief in Saint Nick could damage their relationship in the future. The study says that the common tradition can undermine kids’ trust in parents and leave them open to “abject disappointment.”
It also explained how believing in Santa Claus could be the “final straw” in destroying parent-child relationships down the road.
Kathy McKay, a clinical psychologist at the University of New England in Australia and co-author of the study, said: “The Santa myth is such an involved lie, such a long-lasting one, between parents and children, that if a relationship is vulnerable, this may be the final straw. If parents can lie so convincingly and over such a long time, what else can they lie about?”
While the journal infuriated parents who practice the cheerful holiday tradition, Fox News received an onslaught of outrage when it produced the below video, which might just put them on the naughty list.
“Allow them to enjoy some of the fun things that come with being a kid, including Santa,” one commenter on YouTube wrote.
