High school senior Delaney Johnson suffers from narcolepsy. The disease causes her to randomly fall asleep, and it can strike at unsuitable and sometimes even dangerous times. She also suffers from cataplexy, which causes her to lose the strength and control in some of her muscles while she is awake.
Those with cataplexy maintain full awareness during an attack, but it may cause her head to suddenly nod down, appearing as if she's fallen asleep, or even cause her knees to suddenly give way.
The attacks can happen several times a day, usually lasting for under a minute. To help her out during these attacks, she has been paired with an amazing service dog by the name of Griffin. The beautiful pooch stays close to Johnson at all times, giving her the freedom to go about her day with some privacy. When Johnson's senior prom was approaching, she didn't have a date to attend with, but that was about to change…
Nick Ackerman was born without arms and thus needs a bit of help from Troy, his own wonderful service dog. The fellow senior was filming a documentary about service dogs for his film class when he found out that Johnson wasn't going to prom; it took him a bit of time, but he eventually worked up the courage to ask her out.
The couple ended up going to prom together and both brought their chaperone service dogs along with them! Both plan on attending college in the fall to continue their studies, and both are excited to bring along their loyal service dogs for their next journey.
Please wish these two youngsters the best of luck for the next step in their lives. With their wonderful service dogs by their sides, we're sure they'll live happy and fulfilling lives!
