Some creatures are natural born mothers, and Izzy the Chihuahua found her maternal calling at the age of two — when she met two abandoned baby squirrels.
It's an incredible story, and I'll let Izzy's mom tell it:
About 3 weeks ago some neighborhood children found two baby squirrels, one boy and one girl. Not knowing how to care for them, they came to me and asked if I would help the little ones out. I have been known to take in other abandoned baby animals like birds, kittens, bunnies, squirrels, flying squirrels, sugar gliders and puppies. I happily accepted them into my family and decided on the name Nikki for the girl and Rosco for her brother. We started them on puppy milk (as recommended by our vet) 1cc for each week old and every 2-3 hours.
I noticed that my two year old Chihuahua, Izzy, was very interested in the little squirrels and one morning while I was feeding them she began to check them out. She slowly inched her way closer until she was lying right next to them, she began to lick them and seemed to be investigating the new little critters. After a short time, Nikki began nursing on Izzy and Roscoe followed her lead. Now Izzy doesn't leave her adopted babies sides, she has become very protective of them and will not allow any other person or animal, with exception of me, to come near them. I'm not sure if Izzy ever had puppies of her own, I bought her from a breeder when she was a year old, so just in case she is not producing enough milk I am still supplementing with the bottled milk.
Izzy has since passed away, but her legacy lives on in this heartwarming story.
