Sometimes when life throws you a major curveball, it’s all in how you adapt and take care of each other that allows for the goodness and light to find you again.
This video story posted by Wonderbot explores how after a wildfire destroyed their California home, a father of four was forced to live in tents with his family for months until something completely unexpected happened.
The Hatch family lived a happy life in Grizzly Flats, California. Eric was living life as a dedicated single father when, in 2021, the Caldor wildfire burned across 221,835 acres, including their family home. The fire was finally contained in two months, but Eric’s house was irreparable.
According to KCRA3, after the fire, Eric and his kids took to living in tents, without proper access to washroom facilities, in Somerset, California. It was difficult on the family, but they stuck it out because they had each other to lean on.
As the lone parent, Eric was continually trying to do it all for his kids, including cooking meals and making sure they did all their homework and made it to school every day.
Eric’s 17-year-old daughter, Layla, was especially diligent in her studies and educational pursuits. and she caught the attention of one of her teachers, who wanted to do something to help the family in need.

KCRA3 reports that Layla’s teacher reached out to EmergencyRV.org to let them know how Layla had to walk around her neighborhood in search of Wi-Fi hotspots in order to complete her school assignments each night.
In partnership with the California Fire Foundation, Eric and his family were delivered a free RV to live in.
