Community Funds Beautiful Tiny Homes For South Carolina Flood Victims

Three months ago, catastrophic storms and floods devastated countless homes and families in Southeastern states.

Hit hard by the loss, many residents were left in harsh conditions, and are struggling to rebuild their lives from scratch.

Luckily, there are some organizations and companies out there, like Driftwood Homes USA, who are dedicated to keeping residents safe and warm for the winter.

Just like this pastor who once built homes for Nashville's homeless people, Driftwood is striving to build tiny homes that are comfortable, cozy, and practical.

The first home has recently been completed, and is ready to be delivered to the first family in need in the next few days.

The company is hoping to raise enough funds to continue building these beautiful, simple tiny homes, so that more victims can be facilitated.

In October of 2015, a storm complex devastated multiple states across North America with severely heavy rainfall.

North and South Carolina were among the states most drastically affected by the flash floods.

Roads, bridges, cars, homes, and belongings were washed away by the catastrophic tides by the riverbanks, and hundreds had to evacuate their homes.

To aid those displaced by the flooding, Driftwood Homes USA, a newly formed tiny home company, is helping build custom homes on wheels.

Operating out of Bluffton, SC, the company’s efforts are almost entirely crowd-funded — meaning, supported by those who genuinely want to make a difference in the victims’ lives.

“I knew we had to step in and help,” said Ben Kennedy, owner of the company.

“And I trust others would do the same if we were in this situation.”

Familiar with the homebuilding business, the company had gathered the support of the entire community and many subcontractors and suppliers during the project.

Driftwood Homes is currently working with many organizations to select the families who will be receiving these homes.

“Our hope is that when the immediate housing need of a family is met, they will continue to pay it forward to other families, so that as many people as possible are able to benefit,” said Ben.

In a few days, the first family will be receiving the first tiny home.

The company hopes to raise another $25,000 to cover its expenses in building the second tiny home.

So far, 48 people have donated to the project in the last three months, raising just a little over $8,000.

Although months have passed since the flooding, many families are only just starting to rebuild their homes and relive their lives.

It will be a long and arduous journey for most of them, but with the help of companies like Driftwood, communities will hopefully be on their way to a speedy recovery.
