In the 14th century, a small town named Curon was located in the valleys of Northern Italy. In 1950, the government flooded Curon in order to turn it into a manmade 72-foot lake called Lake Resia.
According to Smithsonian Magazine, nearly half of the town's population was forced out of their homes.
Ever since then, the town's bell tower has been the only visible sign of Curon. The rest of the town has remained underwater — which has made for some very eerie visuals. The village was even featured in the Netflix horror series, Curon.
But seven decades after the town was flooded, it reemerged from the water in 2021 when part of the lake was drained to make repairs.
This construction allowed people to come and explore the Old Curon and all its historic glory — its crumbled foundations, cableway, and city ruins — before Lake Resia was filled up once again.
