Betsy Doyle has been a dedicated teacher for decades. Like so many educators, during the peak of the health crisis, she had to adjusted to a new normal.
In 2021, Betsy was teaching her fourth grade class from Raymond School in Massachusetts over Zoom. After the class returned from lunch break and signed back into their virtual lesson, one of Betsy's students started to panic.
The student, Teresa, said the fire alarm inside her house was going off.
Betsy immediately tapped into her quick-thinking and emergency skills. She asked Teresa if she smelled smoke — and yes, she could.
As the emergency played out on Zoom, with the entire class watching from their screens, Betsy snapped into action.
"The whole time I was clued in on her and her surroundings,” Betsy told CBS. “For a split second, I focused on the rest of my class in silence because I had them muted and that really choked me up.”
