There are many mixed opinions on whether or not standardized testing is really any good for students. A lot of the time, teachers are forced to teach their students how to take the test, rather than how to actually retain information and fuel their brains. However, no matter how much a teacher is opposed to or on board with these statewide tests, they have to stick to the lesson plan. Also, any good teacher would want their student to do well no matter how they feel about these tests.
When the teachers at Hermitage Elementary School in Florida wanted to get their students excited about the Standard of Learning test, or SOL, they took quite an unorthodox route.
I know that when I was in third or fourth grade, I would have really appreciated this. Being the perfectionist that I was, I had to get a top score. However, also being the anxious child I was, I spent more hours worrying about the score than I did actually studying. I'm sure that so many children today react the same way that I did to these tests, and see them as if they are a big, scary, dark cloud.
These teachers are truly top notch. They certainly succeeded in making this big test seem like less of a monster and more of a great learning experience. If only there were more teachers in the world like this.
