The Threshold Choir Sings To Terminally Ill Hospice Care Patients

This is the kind of story that lingers with you days after you first hear about it — or at least, it feels that way to me.

I learned about the Threshold Choir not too long ago, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the absolutely incredible work that they’re doing.

After only 10 short years, membership has blossomed to include 125 chapters all across the country — except they’re not your average choir. They perform at hospice care centers for terminally ill patients, hoping to bring solace to an already somber atmosphere.

"[It's] just so moving to connect with people at this point in their lives," says Tammy Heinsohn, a singer in the choir. "And they may not have anybody else that they can connect with."

As you watch this video, it becomes clear just how much of a visceral impact this choir has on the hospice care patients they visit. Each one has a story unique to their experience, and yet, they all share one thing in common: healing through music.

Like the music therapist who helps parents connect with their babies through the tempo of their hearts, to the Alzheimer’s patients rediscovering new life through song, music is a magnificent balm that everyone can utilize.

"It's very soul-stirring […] to know that I've been able to touch them — to allow them to have that emotional response," continues Heinsohn. She came up with the idea to start the Threshold Choir when she sang at her mother’s bedside, and it’s been immensely successful ever since.
