It's no secret that Manatees are one of the planet's most endangered species — and that man has a lot to do with their decreasing population. That's where Jamal Galves comes in. This incredible hero knew at the young age of 11 that protecting Manatees was his calling. Now, his Belize Manatee Project works to protect threatened coastal species and their habitat — in particular, the West Indian manatee.
Belize has the highest known density of Antillean manatees, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, in the world. Unfortunately, increasing coastal development has caused a major increase in human-related manatee deaths. Habitat destruction, pollution and harmful boating practices are huge causes of these deaths. Regarding boaters, Jamal says, "A lot of it has to do with peoples' lack of understanding or appreciation for manatees. They have no respect for wake zones or no reason to comply. To me, it seems like a small, easy thing for them to comply and just slow down."
As a Manatee conservationist, Jamal helps rescue and rehabilitate orphaned Manatees back to health, as you can see in the touching video below. He is recognized in his field for the important work he does, and has been honored with awards, grants and high praise.
