Telling words greet you during the trailer for the documentary film Times Like These, a rare look into the horror that men face when they’re diagnosed with breast cancer: "Welcome to the club that you never, ever want to be a part of."
"When it comes to breast cancer," says Bill, "nobody mentions men. When it comes to clinical trials, men are not included because there's not enough of us."
And while as few as an estimated 2,600 men were diagnosed with breast cancer this year, "thousands more will go undetected" warns the documentary.
Thankfully, there are many ways in which you may be able to detect cancer in the early stages. Both men and women should be aware of these symptoms, as they may be a sign of something far more sinister. Particularly if you are over the age of 60, medical risks can be preventative.
While the 2013 kick-starter for the full-length documentary was unsuccessful, Times Like These continues to spread an important message — one that we can all share in an effort to raise awareness.
"You're like my brother in this," Bill says to Bob. "We're like breast cancer brothers." The two continue their incredible bond to this day and even run a Facebook page with updates regarding their health and the well-being of their friends who also battle cancer.
We wish Bill, Bob, and their loved ones speedy recoveries!
