Anyone who has ever waited tables knows that the difference between a good and bad night depends almost completely on tips.
At the end of 2015, 17-year-old Garret Wayman was a high school student in Wichita Kansas, waiting tables at a local restaurant to make extra money. At the time he was attending school and working full time trying to earn money to be able to afford the $7,000 debt he had on his car.
Wayman told Tech Insider that he makes $3 per hour before tips, so making tips is very important in terms of meeting his financial goals.
One day last December, Garret was really excited to notice that a customer left a $20 bill under the ketchup bottle at one of his tables.

He told Tech Insider that "getting a $20 tip at the restaurant I work at is very, very rare."

But when Garret went to collect his earnings, he noticed that the bill didn't feel quite right.

The bill was folded over, and when Garret opened it, he realized that it was fake and contained a message inside.

Instead of the $20 he had hoped for, Garret was given a religious pamphlet in disguise.

Needless to say, Garret was not happy to have gotten his hopes up and then to have had them dashed, even if the customer's intentions were noble.
